Un total de 18 equipos han participado en la actual SPL que se inauguro en la temporada 1998-1999, sucediendo a la antigua Primera Division.La temporada escocesa se compone de 38 jornadas.
El primer clasificado jugará la Champions directamente el 2º con previa,3º y 4º jugarán la UEFA por designación por el organismo europeo presisido por Michelle Platini a partir de esta temporada,recuperando así dos posibles equipos en la máxima competición europea.
